My friend was asking for help with her dog. Her 4 year old spayed female is growling at her. She has worked with some trainers in the past who told her she is resource guarding and that she's growling because she's afraid the thing she is guarding will be taken away.
I am having a hard time understanding how this would be treated differently than a dominance problem where the dog thinks it doesn't have to follow your commands. Could someone explain how this works and give suggestions for how to overcome this?
Her main complaints are that she growls over her food bowl and if anyone comes near or sits on her bed with her. What would you do right when the dog growls at you over the item? Seems like if you back off they just learn that growling works but why are they growling in the first place? Thanks for the explanations and help!
I think she understands NILIF but only partially and infrequently encourages it but that was what I thought she should focus on.
