Sarcoptic mange (the really nasty one) is pretty rare -- and demodectic mange is very common, easily treated (not going to kill your dog!), and often age-related and outgrown.
When my boys are at the end of their coat-blowing seasons, the coat is thinner and I do see more of the skin underneath for a few weeks.
What vitamin supplement are you feeding? What does your breeder say?
