The switch to adult kibble should have -- if anything -- slowed his weight gain. Probably what's happened is that his growth rate has just decreased, and you haven't decreased his food accordingly. This happened to me with Selma. I got caught off guard and she turned into a sausage. With Lu, it eventually happened, too, but not until he was older (he's from a slow-growing line).
Cut Tchaka's food. If he's getting 5 cups a day, drop him to 4 cups. I don't think he'll lose a whole lot before the National, but it'll stop him from gaining more. Can you still see the outline of his ribs when he's moving? That's sort of the threshold for me for reeeaaally chunky vs just a little tubby.
