Hi Alison,
ZOE has the same problem in her sleep.
I always let her out whenever she asks to go out, so it's not a problem of time and holding, because if she has to, she can hold it for 12 to 13 hours. I think, but I'm not sure, she does it when she dreams; maybe thinking she's outside (?). I've taken her to the vet last year about it, he gave antibiotics, but that didn't do anything to help the problem. Weeks can go by and ZOE doesn't do it, then in one week she may do it 2 or 3 times. However, I have noticed when she licks herself that area is wet. Now I don't know if it's her saliva or if she's licking up slow leakage. Sometimes it's a small wet spot and doesn't smell like urine, and sometimes it is urine. The wet spot looks big (12 to 14 inches round), but because it's on cloth, liquids would spread more; like when a drop of gasoline hits the ground, it really spreads out. I wish I knew what the problem is and if it's correctable. Right now, we just live with the problem and I don't get bent out of shape about it - just wash more often. I feel sorry for ZOE, because I think she knows she's doing it, but can't help herself.
