Yikes, I'm sorry. This was the same concern we had with Lucy (16 months old) several weeks ago. We were fortunate in that it appears to have been a sprain, rather than a partial tear. After four weeks of rest, she is doing fine.
I assume Kota has just a partial tear, since your concern is it tearing all the way? Did both specialists agree that it is partially torn? Is Kota lame/limping? Did the specialists sedate Kota and do the drawer test and take x-rays?
These are questions that came up as we were waiting for a more definitive diagnosis for Lucy. In my research, I found arguments both for and against surgery. Not much help, I know! But I think it truly comes down to your dog, what is right for him, and how much you trust your vet.
I've heard good things about the Orthodogs group at Yahoo.com.
