I've done 18-19 hr drives now 4 times with Lucius and twice with Selma. And I've done 10 hrs at a time with the cats twice (never with everyone in the car at once). My experience has been that they just get in and settle down, and you get through it. Honestly, the dogs are bouncing off the walls the next day, but mine both travel like troupers. I suspect if the dogs and cats get along ok at home, they'll do ok in-transit; the trick will be keeping the cats contained during the dog's and human's potty breaks and giving them a chance to do their business without the dog harrassing them.
A UHaul seems like not a great idea for the animals' transport, though I feel your pain about not wanting to ship the dog. (I still haven't shipped mine and would rather drive 19 hrs to Wisconsin then put them in checked baggage!) Is it possible to put one person in a UHaul with the stuff -- and maybe the dog -- and another person in a car with the cats?
