I don't know if any of you watched the Kentucky Derby, but I have to share some thoughts on what happened to Eight Belles.
Folks post questions fairly often on this board about when they can start running with their ridgeback or try lure coursing. Watching Eight Belles break down after the Derby serves as a good reminder that growing bones and joints are delicate things. They cannot take the impact that adult bones can withstand. Our dogs grow very quickly and some of them look grown-up when they're only babies. Anatomically, a ridgeback is still a young and growing creature sometimes up to 24 months. Please don't over work a young body. Let them grow up before you ask too much of their bodies!
Peace to Eight Belles.
