I know that compression wounds can be *really* severe and can cause the death of underlying tissues, occasionally requiring amputation if received on an extremity. This is usually due to compartment syndrome (leads to muscle and nerve damage, sometimes requiring surgery to relieve pressure.) I wouldn't be suprised that surgery would be needed to remove necrotic tissue if the wound was large or really severe. Unfortunately, our emergency clinic treats lots of fight injuries and this is one we see often, but surgery for compression injuries is rare. Hope this helps!
