Crush Wounds

Does anyone have any experience with crush wounds? My friend's dogs have gotten into a fight, and the emergency vet suggested that one of them may need surgery to remove injured flesh and allow the wound to heal. The bite in question is to her back, and obviously, no one wants to put a dog through surgery unnecessarily.
