For sure! We look at it now as "how could they do that?!?!"
The reality is that the "records" (the type we're looking for) were only there to get them through production and warranties. Then they are trash to be disposed of. And that's what happened.
So the question isn't "Why didn't they keep them?", the real question is "Why would they keep them?".

: Thanks for your insight Kurt. I'll miss the
: old fire story...a lot more dramatic than
: pitching them in the dumpster!

: Actually, I know more about what is left!
: Remaining records are at the GM History
: Center. There is not a lot known about what
: happened to the records and when they were
: pitched. But they simply were not kept.
: It's more a matter of who kept them, not who
: pitched them, because old records are
: routinely purged. It would have taken an
: extra effort to keep them as was done at
: Pontiac. It was up to the division as these
: were division records, not GM records.
: Cadillac has decent records. Olds and Chevy
: do not. Pontiac was fortunate to have a few
: people with enough foresight to keep the
: records; they were sent to PHS.

: Do you know what transpired?

: Need to put that rumor to bed. Yes the
: records
: are gone, but there was no fire.

: Unless it is built in Canada, you won't find
: it. Olds records burned in the 70s. You
: can decode it yourself, however.
