While the middle of rebuilding my ’67 422 I was putting the motor back together when I did a bad thing. I had bought a cheap torque wrench and… Well, the Main Cap bolts on the number one cap got put on a little too tight and fractured the cap around the bolt hole. My uncle machined about half inch off the cap right near the top of the bolt hole (leaving all of the middle top part of the cap). We installed short bolts. He thinks the cap will hold. I’m not sure. It’s not a racer, but I don’t want to see the crank again anytime soon. My wife will kill me if I have to buy new caps and pay for another line bore… I know Olds used good parts, but can you machine a half inch off the caps, near the bolt holes, and be o.k.?
I appreciate any feedback. I have pictures I can email you if you would like to see what I’m talking about. Fredcraklin at Yahoo dot com.
Thanks,
Fred
