The problem sounds like the wire to the coil may have burnt off when you reversed the polarity to the electrical system. There may be a fusable link wire also that burnt off, this wire is desinged to burn away if a overload or battery polarity is reversed.(when using jumper cables)this wire is normally located on the inner fender drivers side. If I remember correctly it should be on the positive terminal block, shuold have a black cylinder about 3/8" in dia. 1 inch long. If it is not there look on the firewall. Check for 12 volts dc at the coil terminals with the key in the run position.
That silver button on the floor young man is the bright/dim switch for the headlights.

: Hi everyone, first post. My name is Thomas and
: im very new to classic cars. I usually work
: on newer fuel injected cars(audi s4, mustang
: gt, parents cars). I bought a 1967 cutlass
: supreme from the original owner this week,
: been sitting in a garage for 20 years, 55k
: original miles, interior is great shape, has
: some big dents which is why it was parked(so
: I was told by the little old lady haha).
: Anyways I start working on it. Did the
: Marvels Mystery oil in all the cylinders for
: 24 hours then new spark plugs, new oil,
: battery and battery cables. When putting the
: cables on I accidentally switched them for
: half a second, some smoke did come from a
: few wires(big mistake but it happened). I
: dropped the gas tank(has a rust hole) and
: cleared the lines
:
: I go to start it and it keeps turning over
: but not firing(only using starter fluid, gas
: tank not connected). I check for spark and
: nothing. I change out the coil, wires,
: distributor cap and rotor since I was going
: to do that anyways. still nothing. Any ideas
: or helpful hints?
:
: ALSO what does that button on the floor by
: your left foot do inside the car?
