finding vin no on frame

I bought a 1972 olds from out of state it has a vin in the window but the CHP wants to find a matching one on the frame. The Officer was unable to find one in the place he thought it would be. Any ideas of where another vin no would be on this car. If they can't find a matching one they want to take the car!!!!
