8.2" BOP rear swap

I currently have an 8.2" BOP rear with 3.23 gears, and an open carrier. I have found a posi unit that "suppose" to fit my 10 bolt. He tells me that it came out of a 10 bolt BOP but it has 12 bolts that holds on the ring gear. Cast into the posi is 17-2 and A21. What does that mean?? Can a 12 bolt carrier fit into a 10 bolt?? Could what he said about pulling a 12 bolt from a 10 bolt really be true??
