What DOES change that nature and create the strongest love we can know toward God is the work of God the Son on our behalf on the cross - while we were yet sinners, He died for our sins in our place, providing to anyone who believes that good news with HIS perfect righteousness AS A GIFT from God. A gift that is worked for is, as Paul pointed out, "wages" and to not accept God's gift of eternal life based on our belief of the good news of the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ is to insult God in the most extreme terms possiblem- which as already stated is our nature to do. Believers of the gospel (the one and only gospel that God provided to us) makes us new creatures only in Christ - we retain our human nature until we are perfected by the Holy Spirit throughout our lifetime - and for believers, Scripture indicates that if we die in Christ that perfecting work of the Holy Spirit has brought us by then to the image of God's Son. He who began a good work in us will complete His work.
So, if believers try working up more love toward God on their own steam, as suggested in what you share here from that convention, that, my dear friend, is a sign that such a person has rejected God's gift and is busy trying to earn what cannot be had through our works.
I for one do not want my love toward God increased by my own efforts - I want my love for God to be increased only by God's abundant grace - which is an astounding expression of HIS love for me. How abut you?
