When God led me out of 2x2ism years ago I tried to figure out the deity of Jesus directly through the title Messiah. And I found prophesies that Jesus would be known as "God." And Jesus plainly told the woman at the well that He was the Messiah.
Amir says that (in spite of those prophesies) the Jews expected the Messiah to be a man who would liberate the Jews from their oppressors. So it seems they began to miss His arrival in spite of all the miracles He performed in front of their eyes because they were expecting a man, not God. And that surprised me some because of prophesies that Jesus would be “mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6). Even though they had those prophesies regarding their Messiah, they only expected a man.
And coming out of 2x2ism, I suppose I should understand how people can possess the prophesies and still miss that the Messiah is both God and man. And the Jews, like the 2x2s, seemed to have the view that the Messiah came to liberate them from oppressors, even after He told them that He came to save them from their sins. The Jews, like the 2x2s, seem to have thought that the coming Messiah was only concerned with their problems of life here and now.
This might be seen in the case where Jesus told the disciples “let us cross to the other side” one evening, meaning to cross the sea of Galilee in that evening (dangerous). And Jesus was asleep in the boat while a storm brewed suddenly such that waves were filling the boat – yet they had to wake the still sleeping Jesus. And He simply commanded the wind to be still and it was instantly still. And the disciples became even more afraid because they knew only one who could calm the winds, God. Jesus was obviously more than just a man, and they knew that to see God face to face would kill them, yet they had looked on Jesus’ face many times without dying. But now it would seem to them that God was in their boat calming the winds? Thankfully, patience with our own human limitations in such confusion will pay off - I went through it myself and eventually learned that no one (except Jesus) had ever looked on the face of God the Father - Jesus is God the Son.
I wonder if the workers and 2xs would be greatly fearful if they saw a real undeniable miracle that could only be done by God in front of their eyes resulting from prayer in Jesus’ name?
