I want to just speak a little bit about my feelings now, and, ah, concerning some of the Christian doctrines. Ah, because as a hospital chaplain I feel that there is an evil one. Ah, and somehow he is the deceiver. And wherever there is darkness and death and disease and destruction why there I believe is the evil one.
And I feel that I was a victim of darkness. I cannot help but feel so much further than this - for instance how a boy – a young man discovered what I discovered when I was studying the Bible and how he came under scrutiny because he spoke about the deity of Christ, you know – in a meeting. And I remember you mentioning something about this in your letter. And ah, and so I feel that where there is – and maybe that is the reason that we decided “The Secret Sect” - because darkness and secret comes from the word “scrotos” in the Greek and they’re similar, you know – the things of the evil one are secret.
And the light can become darkness. And this I believe happened at the beginning, and ah, when the evil one entered the world - lot of mystery about evil – the Prophet Isaiah tells us that Satan was the most beautiful of the angels. Lucifer – he was more beautiful than the morning star. I don’t know about your country but when we look out from our bedroom window and the most beautiful star early in the morning is the morning star. It shines just so magnificently before dawn. The sun is possibly shining on it you know but it is just glorious. And the Prophet Isaiah speaks of Satan being the angel that was more beautiful than the morning star.
And envy entered his heart. And Lucifer he’s called. And he – he wanted to become like God. He wanted to be greater than God. And it seems as if – the Prophet says there that he deceived the nations. Something happened at the beginning. Before Adam and Eve existed.
It seems to me that God could not be any less than His true nature. If He didn’t allow both the angels and the humans to have freedom. We know this is true. You might love your children and want them to go a certain direction. But if you don’t give them freedom, you’ve lost them. And God couldn’t be any less than God. If He didn’t give the angels freedom and He didn’t give humanity freedom.
And so the angels, many of them went astray. Lucifer and great numbers of those spiritual angelic hosts erring. And of course these are pictured in the Garden of Eden after the Father and His Son had made our first appearance – because we must remember that that was a join effort, “let us make man in our image, like ourselves.” So the Christ was there at the beginning, as John one and many other passages bring out. Without Him was nothing made that was made. And in Him was life and the life was the light of men. It was them, the Trinity, the Father and His Son had breathed the Spirit into him.
And of course in that Garden – the angel he takes the form of the serpent, a very beautiful creature, but deceives us. And so the dreadful sadness of God that comes out of Him – it’s like the sadness of Christ when He wept and wept over Jerusalem because He would have longed for them to have accepted Him and to have received Him. And He wept for them because He wanted them to be like a brood under a hen’s wings. They didn’t want Him. They rejected Him. He felt the pain of rejection just like our heavenly Father felt in the garden. Sense the pain – ‘Oh what have you done?!’ When they distrusted Him and listened to Satan. They got hooked on this thought of becoming like God and knowing good and evil. So, death entered and it was a dreadful death as Milton brings out in an incredible inspired work I believe, in Paradise Lost. It was a dreadful death because it was a death in a relationship – a death in trust. We know that death is one of the most awful things – that death is of the evil one. God made man - the Scriptures say this - for immortality. In the likeness of God made He them. Imperishable. And death entered the world through the devil.
Now if you don’t understand death, you cannot understand life. And I think it’s important for us as Christians to know both sides of the coin. This has been sharpened in my work in the last ten years as a hospital chaplain. Because many people when they think about God, they blame God. And they get angry with God. Especially when they know they are going to die - even Christians.
I remember one day visiting this lady and she said, “When I meet God,” – and she had had a horrible thing in her life in Europe - and she said, “I’m going to hit him with a big stick!” She meant that. And I thought this ah, – so you’re just like masses of people. He’s - he has deceived you. Because, we project our anger often onto someone we love.
And we project our anger onto God. And of course, I would think, Martha possibly hitting Jesus with a big stick. When He got there a bit too late for her brother’s death, she got angry with Him, didn’t she? She said, If you were here this’d never have happened. Too bad the broom wasn’t near-by – she possibly would’ve lambasted our Lord. She was angry.
And a lot of people get very very angry with God because they don’t know or they don’t understand that the author of the cruel things in their life is this wretch, the devil. He brought death in all its many and varied forms. I mean not just physical death.
And I think we must ever be thankful to God that this part of you and me that is talking and thinking tonight, it’ll never die. The spirit cannot die. It is what is indestructible and imperishable. We never die. Yeah, ye die yet ye shall live.
That was the great I Am who said that. And I want to speak about that for a little while. Because, to understand the deity of Christ, we must understand that He is the one who spoke to Moses in the burning bush. He is the one, when Moses said to Him at the burning bush, What is your name?, He said, I Am is my name. The name by which I Am to be known for all generations. I Am the God of your forefathers. I Am the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.
Now the one who could say to Mary and Martha that evening or that day, I Am the resurrection – it’s a beautiful word – it’s stronger than death – and the life. And he who believes in me, although he dies, yet he lives – if you live and believe in me you’ll never die. I Am – He was here in the flesh.
Now, I think we don’t understand the evil one so much in the Old Testament. Although we get the picture of him as the serpent in the Garden. We get a wonderful picture of him in the book of Job. Job likely had an insight of even the physical calamities. The earthquakes as well as his boils and all of the tragedy he went through – the loss of his family.
So, there is a difference between what we call the permissive will of God – God will permit things to happen because God knows in some incredible way that the spirit is what is eternal. And you and I are only here for about that long. Because we are in the presence of one whom a thousand years are just like a day. So even if you lived to a hundred years you’d only be a few hours old in God’s sight. And that He knows that what we’re suffering He’s with you in all your suffering.
And Job knew that – Job knew that God wouldn’t fail him – that it was the devil that brought his boils and his suffering. He had his comforters and they were pretty – ah, like some of the people in the sect I suppose and so many people in the world who think they’re comforting us but they’re criticizing us in a sense. But Job, he knew that his suffering came from the evil one. And that’s in the beginning of the book.
But as you come on into the New Testament, you then see them in the struggle that we’re having. And trouble that you and I are having, because we have shared darkness. And we have shared some of the darkness in this sect and there are many people I believe in this sect who must be suffering so much.
When I read these wonderful books that are now coming out – Reflections and so on – I – I’ve read them. I’ve read your stories. And the experiences of people – the sadness, and the cruelty of their faith and ah, and I feel so sad for them.
And, see, when you come on into the New Testament, you find that our Lord’s struggle Himself was with the devil. From the moment He was born. Herod tried to kill Him. And the devil was behind that – destroyed all the children in Bethlehem. Then all through His life His tremendous struggle over the temptations. And ah, He struggled not to destroy Himself. Get behind me Satan. Do not tempt the Lord your God. He had to struggle with evil right through His life. And you find for instance the crippled woman. And there He’s – He’s in the synagogue. And He said, Satan has bound this daughter of Abraham. Not God, it’s Satan. And I believe the evil He struggled with was the evil between truth and deceit.
Someone who could say, I Am. Before Abraham was even born -- I was – that would be the right thing to say grammatically – but, I Am.
And so, because He claimed to be from God and He told them that they had gone the wrong way – I think Israel had gone the same way as this sect.
And although they might have started out ah, with a view – protest against a certain way – the parish type ministry and the church – and there was a lot of snobbery. And sectarian movements I think are always a protest to try to bring the church back to something - what is reality in the Scriptures. They got hooked on – on all of the ah, things that they got hooked on. They could never have imagined – a lot of those early Workers – the monster that Irvine created. That it became such a power structure.
And the thing was they despised the church. They got hooked on it. And Irvine, you know, he was so anti the church - when I read things that were in the Belfast newspapers and the things that were written in Enniskillen – he just hated the churches. And he moved them away from the truth of Christ.
The danger – and our Lord warned us against the leaven of the Pharisees – someone has said it regarding need for perfection, that we have been involved with some of these Workers who, sadly to say, seem to be the successors of the Pharisees. They developed a harshness, and a vainness and some who obviously and ah, unwittingly have gone the wrong way.
Then you find out the Lord Himself having to struggle for the truth. And that He is the truth. He alone is the truth. He alone I think can give us peace with God. He alone can say, I Am he who has died and I Am alive forever more. And I will make all things new. And there will be no more death, nor pain, nor crying. I Am the Alpha and the Omega.
So, even Irvine seems to have thought that’s who he was. Just alone some mysterious elevation that is characteristic of the fall of the angel, Lucifer when he wanted to become like God. And he set himself up as head of that angelic host – ever opposed to God.
So our Lord says, I Am the beginning, and even before the beginning – I created this universe.
I feel that the reason we -- our granddaughter the other day, she, (bit untranscribable) – saying to her – how she said to her – her mother – Helen was on the phone – they live in Queensland – she said, - Jena is her name – she said, Jena had this (bit untranscribable) around six months since they were visiting us – they were down on Christmas morning – (bit untranscribable) she ah, she remembered Doug (bit untranscribable) and how you and me don’t realize that what is going in here – what was going on in the minds of these wonderful people that I met all those years ago – it was so vivid – their feelings, their recollections, their grief, their agony.
It is hard for you and me to realize that we are eternal. That we are in the presence of someone that is without a beginning and there’ll never be an end. And I believe hundreds of years from now, we’ll look back on these few years the same as we can look back on our early childhood. The spirit will never die. God is with us. He wants us to know Him. He loves us. He has redeemed us. We as believers. And He doesn’t have some strict code. It’s by faith alone. I want to stress that. The work of Christ. The kindness. The winsomeness. And always the truth will say that.
One of the papers there said that he changed John 3:16 – these were his words. It says in John 3:16 that ah, God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever BELIEVES in him will never perish. They changed that. It’s not BELIEVING – it’s sacrificing and all these burdens and marks. He said I wonder what it’s going to be like – it’s going to be darker in fifty years time. He could see where it would go. He knew. [the tape has a skip-glitch at this spot] to enjoy them – He accepts us – our Lord – like He accepted Peter. It’s a beautiful thing. He used these beautiful strategies in love. And here, even on the cross, Father forgive them.
[transcriber’s note – Edward Cooney changed John 3:16 in these words – no doubt this is the newspaper report Mr. Parker is remembering many years after reading it, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son that whosoever SELLETH ALL THAT HE HATH should not perish but have everlasting life.” (Impartial Reporter, June 2, 1904)]
And we need to love these people who are still blinded in darkness. I met one of them not so long back, a lovely young chap that I know in the sect. I – I just talked to him a little while. And I said, Have you discovered ah, that Jesus is - is God? “No way is he God!”– I knew that young man – I have experienced it – he just walked to the other side of the street. He hasn’t seen that – can’t see that because in the sect, like Iarael, they think it’s demonic. Israel – Son of God – that’s why Irvine objected, You are of your father, the devil, because he thought the church was Satanic.
Not Christ - He alone is the truth, the way and the life. I’ll come on the clouds with legions of angels. That’s what we become – I believe we’re in the making – we become like angels in the making. We go on to serve.
And we are in a warfare. There is a war going on and even today we see the cosmological factors and the spiritual factors and the economic factors and corruption on almost every level. It’s like that last war when the enemy was on all those fronts. And we are at war And you are at war.
We need to pray for these people – pray for the Workers because they need to repent, I believe.
They have spread such dreadful lies about that book. There are people who are too frightened even to touch it. They have set it down with speed.
I can assure you that there is not one thing in that book that is not correct and that is not true. We went to so much trouble. There may be a letter or a misspelling of a name – what of it. Everything else is the truth. And they spread lies because they are instruments of darkness. And that is why we named it The Secret Sect.
