Hello Chris,
I have read the Gospel According to Jesus, but not the other book you recommended. The gifts with which the Father has blessed many other members of the body of Christ are truly amazing, and I am so thankful to be able to be blessed by their gifts now - MacArthur, Piper, Tozer, A.W. Pink, Wayne Jacobsen, Les Feldick, Vernon McGee, Michael Easley, and on and on. A book by A.W. Pink on the Sovereignity of God has captured my book-reading time at the moment.
I'm not sure why I did not believe this fellowship was from the beginning. I got the 1997 letter and briefly read it - the details were new and interesting, but the concept of having a start date was not a shock. Nor do I remember being aware at that time of teachings and preachings that insinuated it was. However, in the past five years I am conscious of these insinuations, but maybe it is just lack of clarity in the message and use of trite expressions that have plagued us for years and I am now listening closer.
So the history in concept was not an issue, but the doctrine of exclusivity was the tough nut to crack for me. It took the Father many years and experiences for me to understand the error of that belief. If we could get this one issue examined and understood, I honestly believe many of the other issues would be resolved:
- the history would not have to be hidden
- spiritual pride in our group could be replaced by humility
- Christ's atoning sacrifice would be the focus, not our own human efforts or sacrifice
- legalism would not be the controlling force but could be replaced by the guidance of the Holy Spirit
- we could embrace and love other members of the body
- we could enjoy and appreciate and share in the blessings of others which would lead to a solid understanding of fundamental doctrine
- we could rejoice in understanding grace, repenting of our sin, and bringing glory to God by being most satisfied in Him (not in an earthly association)
- corporately, this fellowship group could thrive and experience spiritual growth
- and individually, members could be enriched by eternal rewards instead of concentrating on building with wood, hay and stubble.
Until that happens…..
