Cleft palate surgery

My son Matthew is 11 months old with PRS, he had a distraction in December 2008. He is getting his palate closed next month and will be 12 1/2 months old. He is a thumb sucker, any suggestions on how to break this habit? And what kind of sippy cups did you use after surgery. Thanks for all of the help, this has been the best resource for our family.
