He gets his speech through Early Intervention. I've told his S.T. at almost every session that I think he needs more days. She feels he's making good progress. It's the fact that she cancels at least once a month! This month for example: she had a migrain one week, he was sick the next, then this week she had her cat put to sleep, so she was upset about that and canceled! So as it stands it's been 3 weeks since his last session! I just don't know how to handle it. Everything is the same as last year at his IEP, but according to them, he doesn't need more intense therepy. It stinks "just being a parent". Too many limitations when ,like you said, I know him best.

: Kerri,
: I would suggest that you tell your speech
: therapist you would like to have another IEP
: meeting because you have some concerns with
: your sons progress and the amount of service
: he is recieving. (As a parent, you have the
: right to call for an IEP meeting whenever
: you think its necessary) you do not have to
: wait until the annual IEP meeting is
: scheduled. During the meeting, tell them why
: you think ur son needs more speech (not
: making sufficient progress is what they need
: to hear) and give them examples of things he
: says that you cant understand easily (make a
: list before you go). I would also suggest
: you take another family member or friend for
: support, because IEP meetings can seem very
: intimidating to parents.
:
: Is your son recieving services through the
: school system? If your childs IEP says he
: should be getting speech once a week, and
: the SLP calls in sick one day, LEGALLY they
: have to make that session up to you. Now on
: the other hand, if your son misses speech
: b/c HE is sick, they do not need to make it
: up.
:
: You know your child better than any
: professional out there. Remember, you are an
: equal member of the IEP team so you have the
: right to weigh in on the decision making
: process. Good luck!

: My son, who is 4, started speech therapy
: through early intervention about a year ago.
: My problem is, it's once a week!! And it
: gets canceled if the pathologist is sick or
: they have off school that day! My question
: is...how often should he be getting
: speech??? In my opinion I think he should be
: going to their preschool and getting it
: every day. There are times when even I
: don't understand him, which frustrates both
: of us! He can make pretty much all the
: sounds, but has been talking so long like
: this, it's almost like it's habit. When I
: tell him the correct way to say the words he
: can say it 90% of the time. I'm so
: frustrated but feel like I'm stuck since he
: "doesn't qualify" for more help
: through them. Any suggestions??
