Hi I saw your post and hopefully I can be of help in some way. My grandaughter, Lauren who is now 10 yrs old, beautiful, smart and in great health other than teeth issues(braces) that is all we are going thru right now. Lauren was trached at birth. After many futile attempts to get her to eat, we ended up with a g tube which she kept until she was 2 yrs old. She was diagnosed as failure to thrive, in and out of the hospital for aspiration pneumonia. SHe had reflux as well. She still continues the reflux/ aspiration etc until they moved her g tube into her small intestine.(J-tube) Jejenum.(sp) She was on predigested milk for a long time , plus we had to add mazola oil into her tube for weight gain. She did a complete turn around and started gaining weight. She weighed 6/6 at birth and only weighed 9 lbs at 6 mos so I feel your pain. She weighed 20 lbs at l4 mos and had successful palat repair. When we tried to feed her, she refused and would heave, gag and vomit everytime we put something in her mouth. We are from N.C. and finally ended up in Paterson, N.J. at the childrens hospital for feeding and swallowing. We stayed there a month and they were remarkable. The procedure they used to get her to eat was unbelievable. I will be happy to email you and give the details if you are interested, but I know this email is getting lengthy but will be more than glad to communicate ref this feeding issue. Lauren now eats everything in sight and is a happy normal 10 yr old. I wold love to email you her picture but I dont think i can on this site. I thank God for the PRS network and Nancy Barry, the founder, who was a lifeline to keep us going during the first 2 yrs of Laurens life. I probably have used up too much space so I will close for now. Good luck with your son and if I can be of help, please contact me

: When my son's g-tube was placed at 6 weeks of
: age, I now see that I was naive to think
: it'd be so temporary. He just turned one and
: is not eating. His palate has yet to be
: closed-was supposed to be this week but is
: postponed due to a crummy sleep study. I'm
: going to try to have a swallow study done
: since he hasn't had one in a while, but any
: suggestions on getting him interested???? He
: has a speech therapist that comes to our
: home once a month, but she's had no luck
: either. He has gerd and was recently put
: back on prevacid, so his vomitting has
: slowed. I thought that might be one factor
: contributing to his fear of eating.
:
: I just feel defeated. He really doesn't know
: what to do with solids in his mouth, he will
: either accidently swallow and gag and throw
: it up, or instantly spit it out. Friends,
: family, strangers, tell us to try sweets and
: that to get his interest, but taste is not a
: major factor when you have oral-sensory and
: motor issues.
:
: Sorry so long....please respond if you've
: had a similar experience and found that
: something has worked. I know we all go
: through feeding issues,
: so I know I shouldn't feel alone, it is just
: tough. Thank you
: Katie
