I found the following site helpful to educate myself, friends and family on what the mandibular distraction entails:
http://pedsent.com/surgery/swfs/distraction/distraction.htm
My son was 4 months when he had it done. The morning after a rountine sleep study, they admitted him and decided they had to do something about his airway(he desated into the teens, even on his belly!)
He stayed in the hospital for 12 days. The hardest part is definitely seeing him intubated. My son was intubated for 7 days. But it only got better from there. The sleep study he had after the distractors were put on had amzing results. He stayed in the 98-100 range.
I will say though, i think the obstruction is back. It has been 6 months since the distraction. He is having another sleep study in a week and i dont know what they will do about it next. Also, unfortunately oral feeds did not improve for us after surgery.
I can also send you before, during and after pics. If you'd like, send me an email...wish you luck with the surgeries, I will say a prayer.
