Anne is completely correct. When the palate is forming during invitro; the ear canals are more at an angle and that was the explanation to me. Eventually they will come down at a straight level as his head grows.
Rory is what we call "seasonally deaf". He has had 8 sets of tubes by 9 years old and I can usually tell when they fall out or get clogged - he'll talk like he's underwater and hard to understand. This makes him frustrated because he can't understand why we can't understand him and make him repeat himself.
So comes early spring, because his sinuses for the winter season drains into his canals, he becomes hard to understand.
Quick note: We just found out that Rory's tubes fell out, but when he had his annual audiology test done, he has hearing within normal range. He might have outgrew the ear tube placements....yeah!!!
Hope this helps

: My daughter's speech therapist explained it
: best- when there is fluid in the ears what
: my daughter was hearing was the same as I
: would hear if I lay in the tub with my ears
: under water and then spoke. The only trouble
: we had with the tubes were she kept
: outgrowing them and they had to be replaced
: - 8 times before age 9.

: Hi Anie...not sure if I understand the post
: or
: not, but ear tubes are usually placed at
: time of palate repair. Most all babies with
: cleft will need ear tubes to help with fluid
: build up behind the eardrum. They don't
: necessarily have to have infections to have
: fluid build up. It is usually done at the
: time of palate repair because they are going
: under anesthesia for surgery and it prevents
: them from having another
: procedure/anesthesia. They should recheck
: his hearing six weeks later. I would advise
: you to go ahead and let them place the tubes
: while he is under for his palate repair
: considering he is already having some
: infections/fluid. My daughter had her tubes
: placed at nine months also and had only had
: one ear infection but when her hearing was
: tested, had severe conductive hearing loss
: due to fluid. Her hearing was checked a few
: weeks ago and was normal....i think she
: heard stuff I couldn't hear!!

: Hi! i have a 9 mo. old baby boy who is going
: to have his palate repaired in the next
: month (i am frightened), and last time i saw
: the surgeon he mentioned the possibility of
: placing ear tubes (my son had some fluid
: when he was assessed) at the same time of
: the repair, my boy has had only 1 ear
: infection since he was born and it happened
: last week and we noticed it because it just
: happened that he had a follow up app. to
: check his weight, anyways i have been
: reading these posts since last august and i
: have read that the ear tubes actually come
: off at the time of the surgery is anyone
: familiar with this? i would really
: appreciate some advise, i will definitely
: bring this up during our pre-op visit but i
: would like to have some input from different
: people..well thank you all so much, God
: Bless!!
