Hi Lori.
I a squeezing the haberman. I'm pretty sure the SLP told me to squeeze the haberman when she is actively sucking and to let go wen she swallows. Is that right? I'm second guessing myself because of heard a couple of different ways to do it now. I don't continuously pump with every suck, do I?
She does occasionally arch her back and spit up. Usually when she arches her back while eating, it seems it is time for her to be burped because she has so much air in her belly. As long as I burp her frequently and keep her upright for 30 minutes after eating, we seem to keep the spitting up/reflux under control. At least I think so. We haven't had a swallow study done yet, but I think the SLP was waiting until she could get more by bottle before doing that?

: Hi Donna. Are you squeezing the haberman
: while feeding her? My son was unable to get
: anything out on his own. He came home with
: an ng tube. He had it until he was about
: three months old. I remember just dreading
: feeding time because I would get so stressed
: out. Now looking back I wish I wouldn't
: have worried so much about it. She will get
: it eventually on her own time.
:
: While eating from the bottle, does she arch
: her back and pull away from the bottle? If
: so, she might have reflux. My son used to
: do that until we put him on meds. After
: that, he was a much better eater.
:
: By the way, they told us not to try bottle
: feeding for more than 30 minutes, otherwise
: he would be burning more calories than he's
: getting.

: Thanks everyone for your responses to my
: other
: post. I have more questions. Or maybe I
: just need some encouragement.
:
: These feeding issues make me feel so lost.
: It's so time consuming every day to find
: time to pump enough to increase my supply,
: try to feed Alana from the haberman bottle
: and, finish up what she doesn't eat through
: the g-tube.
:
: I'm so determined for her to eat completely
: by mouth so we can get this g-button out. Is
: this a realistic goal? They said it was our
: goal when we were discharged. I have no
: idea how long it's going to take for her to
: be able to eat completely by mouth though.
: Weeks? Months? She's getting 30ml now out
: of the haberman......a couple weeks ago she
: could only get 10ml or less. I wonder if
: there is something we could be doing to get
: better at this? Or does it just take
: time/growth. I haven't tried any other
: bottles except the haberman. And I'm so
: worried that she is getting enough to eat
: and is gaining weight. She is still so tiny
: and I want her to grow so her jaw will grow.
: But the docs say she will probably burn
: extra calories working hard to eat. And
: she's been spitting up a little bit too. Not
: sure if she is getting to much air while
: eating, or air while being fed through the
: g-button, or if it's reflux. Or maybe we are
: overfeeding her since she is not in control
: of how much she is eating?
:
: We do follow up next week with our ENT and
: SLP, so I will be asking the same things.
