My daughter has not had her palatte repaired yet...her repair is scheduled at 14 months of age. We weaned her off the tube at 9 months of age. Hope this helps.

: No, i have not heard that about hunger from
: either of the speech therapists. Thanks for
: the info. and that really makes sense to
: feed him boluses at night to make up for
: what he lacks during daytime oral feeds. i'd
: be all for trying it, im not sure everyone
: else would be on board yet, and a little
: concerned that he really hasnt mastered even
: the tastes. So just curious, have many of
: you started the weaning before or after the
: palate repair or doesn't seem to matter, and
: just waited til the time was right for
: him/her?

: Jennifer is right, it may take awhile for
: him
: to get his hunger cues back. When we'd try
: to go cold turkey with kate, it never
: worked. She'd rather starve. When we weaned,
: we did it opposite -- we cut out daytime
: feeding and gave her 3 boluses overnight
: (7p, 11p, 3a). At 7p, I let her drink as
: much as she could, then tube feed the rest.
: She never woke hungry, but ped felt this was
: the best way. We started that when she was
: 10mos old. By 15/16mos we cut out the 3am to
: try and prompt hunger in the morning. Still
: didn't work, but by then she was eating
: better overall and was making up some during
: the day. I'm rambling...you should call
: your GI and discuss it. I'm a big proponent
: of listening to your gut and your kid. I
: pushed and pushed each step of the way. If I
: hadn't, she probably would have had a gtube
: and would still be using it.

: Katie,
:
: Our speech therapist said that skipping a
: couple feedings really won't affect hunger
: very much...especially a kid who has been
: tube fed. It can take a couple weeks for
: hunger cycles to regulate. Hope this info
: is helpful. Good luck!

: Thanks very much. We saw the asst.
: crainofacial surgeon yesterday. I explained
: to her my concerns and she agreed, but also
: said its something i have to take up with
: GI. We dont see them til april though. also
: i had never asked about feeding pre and post
: palate repair and ive finally found out my
: dr will not allow bottle/pacifier surgey
: for us is still a time frame of 9-12 mos and
: he is 6 mos. so really i just want to skip
: the bottle. she talked about cups with me
: and sent me home with one. i like the take
: and toss bc it really only comes out when u
: squeeze like the haberman.
: anyway i guess i will just continue solids
: and try the cup and when i feel he is ready
: i will cut feeds out or in half as many of
: you did. i will ask GI if we can play around
: with higher cal during day feeds to cut out
: the night. also, i have skipped those 2
: feeds he gets during the night a few times
: and hes fine, sleeps thru them but doesnt
: seem desparate to eat in the
: morning...thanks again for all the help
