Yes I used a knife or scissor to cut the Nuby open a bit more.

: Thanks very much Angela & Holly (I may end
: up looking into the cleft palate cup)
: Angela, did you use a knife on the Nuby
: sippy cup as well? I do have the Nuby soft
: spout and have had very limited success, but
: I will try to make the wholes a litte
: bigger. I know with the Haberman nipples,
: new ones are too 'tight' for my son to feed
: himself and I have to make the opening
: larger with a knife.

: We tried every cup out there and the 2 that
: worked for us were the Nuby soft spout. It's
: the one with a clear silicone top that
: almost looks like a bottle nipple. The
: beauty of it is they don't really have to
: suck, just gnaw or chew on the spout to get
: the liquid out. We also used the First Steps
: Take and Toss. I used a sharp knife to make
: the holes larger and they worked fine. But
: the NUby was what worked best initially post
: op. Holly is right about the valves -- no
: way a kid with cleft palate can get anythign
: out of them. And we were told it would be
: several months post op before her suck would
: be comparable to a typical child. And no
: valve use during that time as to not
: compromise the repair. We ended up just
: watching her close, cups only at the table,
: etc and after awhile, she was fine. We never
: went to valves at all.

: I am hoping to find some suggestions for
: sippy
: cups that have worked with your children
: (pre-palate repair), or techniques that
: helped your chidren to drink from them. My
: son is having his palate repaired early
: April and he needs to be off his bottle
: prior to the surgery (as per surgeon's
: request). He uses the haberman bottle
: presently and can drink milk from it on his
: own.
: As for sippy cups, I have tried the Nubby
: sippy cup, but find he cannot create enough
: suction to get the milk out. I have also
: tried the Playtex (soft spout) cup, but
: again find he cannot create enough suction
: when the 'plug' is in, he can get milk
: without the 'plug' but it just becomes may
: too messy. I am trying not to go the cold
: turkey route, but am starting to feel his
: surgery date looming. My 2 older sons flat
: out refused to take milk from their sippy
: cups, so perhaps I should just offer water,
: but am nervous if I do he will not take the
: milk later on.
: Any advice or bottle recommendations would
: be greatly appreciated.
: Thanks, Cheryl
