Hey there....I feel where you are coming from! Luckily, Kates ps doesn't require them to be off the bottle prior/after surgery...whatever they will take liquids from. A haberman doesn't even require suction but i guess that it is still possible. I had good luck with the avent magic cup w/o the valve. It requires no suction at all. The downside to any option is that it has the potential to make a big mess. I let Kate practice with hers in the bathtub...easy clean up!! I don't think that you are going to have any luck finding a pre surgery solution that doesn't require taking out the spill proof valve...just not possible for kids with cleft palate to create the negative pressure required to use them beside the fact that most of those cups are hard for anyone to "suck" out of! I know some have had good luck with the soft sip feeder by medela or the ross cleft palate feeder (the one that is kind of like a thin rubber tube on the tip). I am thinking of purchasing one or both of those before Kates palate repair in march. Good luck!...try the avent...might work for you.

: I am hoping to find some suggestions for sippy
: cups that have worked with your children
: (pre-palate repair), or techniques that
: helped your chidren to drink from them. My
: son is having his palate repaired early
: April and he needs to be off his bottle
: prior to the surgery (as per surgeon's
: request). He uses the haberman bottle
: presently and can drink milk from it on his
: own.
: As for sippy cups, I have tried the Nubby
: sippy cup, but find he cannot create enough
: suction to get the milk out. I have also
: tried the Playtex (soft spout) cup, but
: again find he cannot create enough suction
: when the 'plug' is in, he can get milk
: without the 'plug' but it just becomes may
: too messy. I am trying not to go the cold
: turkey route, but am starting to feel his
: surgery date looming. My 2 older sons flat
: out refused to take milk from their sippy
: cups, so perhaps I should just offer water,
: but am nervous if I do he will not take the
: milk later on.
: Any advice or bottle recommendations would
: be greatly appreciated.
: Thanks, Cheryl
