Hi Karin,
How has your baby been feeding up until now - is he taking his milk from a bottle? My son with PRS started solid foods around the 6 month mark. Like my two older sons (nonPRS), I started him the same & made sure he was ready (he could hold his head up and sit upright when in his highchair, was showing signs of being interested in food, etc.), but was definitely more cautious(and nervous) when I started solids with him.
I started him on a very runny rice/oatmeal cereal. I let him taste the cereal on his lips/tongue and slowly started giving him small spoonfuls. Any child, PRS or not will take some time to get used to solid food. Advice would be - take it slow, let your son dictate how much he wants to eat and be patient. Try different consistencies with the cereal if this helps. My OT suggested trying to feed to the side of the mouth - but this never really worked for us.
I am not sure what your experience was like with the bottle, but it took my son 5 months to feed exclusively from the bottle. My son started solids when he was 6 months old, he is almost 9 months and is doing really well on solids; cereal, pureed fruits/veggies, nutrios(like cheerios), bananas, avacados and just starting on pasta ... it did take a good 6 weeks for him to become comfortable on solids, some feeds were better than others (if a feed isn't going well, stop it and try again later or the next day). Have fun with it and know that he will get there!
With regards to the chin. I don't think there is an exact answer to this question - it really depends on the child. From what I have been told by my doctors - most do grow out on their own, but some children will/may need plastic surgery to help bring the jaw forward. Some babies have jaw distractions to help with breathing very early on ... all PRS kids are different!
