Hi, my son is now 3 1/2 years old... he had decay in his back tooth, so the dentist "fixed" it and put a silver crown on it. This procedure was done in the outpatient hospital building rather than the dental office due to concerns with sedation. Ever since he had the surgery done, he has complained daily that the tooth is still hurting him- only worse than before. I was instructed to just give him motrin for the pain and eventually he would "adapt" to the new crown in his mouth. His daycare director called me last week and told me he was crying over his tooth so i immediatly went to pick him up and took him to a local dentist nearby. (he was seen by a dentist 2 hrs away innitially b/c he was the only one i could find who did dental procedures in a hospital setting)
The local dentist told me he is not "taking well" to the crown and the whole tooth has to be extracted. His gums are inflamed and raised up around the tooth. He was given an antibiotic to help with the swelling. The dentist would like to do the tooth extraction procedure in his office. We have an appointment tomorrow morning. The local dentist has spoken with the dentist that did the crown procedure and apparently they both agreed extraction is needed and it CAN be done in the local dentists office.
We were told by the specialist that our son CAN NOT have any type of anesthsia outside of a hospital setting due to his history with breathing problems. I informed the local dentist about this and he said he could just use local anesthetics to numb him and maybe a little laughing gas to relax him.
Is laughing gas considered anesthsa?? The last procedure was done in a hospital setting with 3 anesthiologists standing by, who had trouble intubating him due to his small airway. I'm really nervous about tomorrow. Is tooth extraction a huge procedure? Will he be alright with just using the local anesthetics or wil he be in too much pain? I should mention my son previously had a trach, jaw distraction, cleft pallate repair, ear tubes, g-tube and scar tissue revision sugeries. Any input would greatly be appreciated!
