I just ran into this board also. What Carson does sounds just like what my 7 month old does. He does it when he's eating solids though. I really do think that it's his tongue and food blocking his airway. It helps if I suck out his nose and lean him forward a bit. I would try doing that with your son the next time that it happens.

: Kind of sounds like he is obstructing when
: eating. The thing about PRS kids is that
: their tongue is too big for their mouth, so
: the motion of eating and swallowing could be
: causing his tongue (which it sounds like he
: otherwise keeps controlled) to move back in
: his airway and cause him to freak out a
: little. Is he on a monitor at night or at
: all??
:
: As for the reflux, I'm only a parent, but it
: doesn't sound like reflux to me. Kate was
: diagnosed with reflux at 3 mos, but up to
: that point we had never seen anything, it
: was completely silent reflux. And once we
: got her on the meds, whatever the hospital
: saw that caused them to test her, went away.

: when he has an "episode" there is
: always some sort of discharge via mouth
: and/or nose of formula/mucus...so I'm pretty
: sure it isn't his tongue. The apnea test was
: while he was only on his back. The one thing
: that does bother me a bit is that he had no
: episodes while in the hospital...but he had
: all kinds of wires hooked up to him so we
: couldn't even hold him...but he pretty much
: stayed in the same position (on his back)
: the whole time. I mean maybe it is the
: movement or something like that that causes
: the "episodes"..?? Thanks Angela
: for your input...I really value others
: opinions. Have a good day.

: Are you sure his tongue isn't blocking his
: airway?? You mentioned a sleep apnea test,
: but when was that done? My daughter was fine
: positionally for 3 weeks and then started
: having issues...similar to what you
: describe. What was happening was her tongue
: would sort of get caught back there, and she
: didn't know how to get it out. When they did
: the sleep test, did he sleep in all
: positions, or just on his belly??

: Hello everyone, I just ran across this msg.
: board and I wanted to touch base with some
: people that may be able to help me thru some
: tough times and help me understand a few
: things. My wife and I spent the weekend in
: the hospital because my son Carson has these
: "episodes" where he appears that
: he is choking and can't catch his breath. He
: turn bright red, eyes water, he gets stiff
: and he waves his arms in what appers to be
: "desperation" to breathe. The Dr.
: told us that he thought it was reflux and
: during the hospital stay, he didn't have one
: episode. Now we have been home just one day
: and he is already starting them up again.
: The Dr. put Carson on Prevacid oral liquid
: for him to help with the reflux. He passed a
: 24 hour sleep apnea test with flying colors
: and everything else came up ok with his
: upper GI and other swallowing tests. Has
: anyone else ever heard of these
: "episodes"? They are VERY scary
: and most of the time we have to suction his
: nose and mouth out just for him to get air!
: Anything anyone can pass along would be
: helpful. Thanks for your time.
