Hi,
Its been a while since I've visited this site. My son is two in June and it is almost a year since his palatoplasty. He has what we believe is isolated PRS and a bilateral cleft of hard and soft palate. My experience is that I tried absolutely everything before surgery with little success and lots of screaming. My son was primarily bottle fed still at that point with only a little puree and I was super stressed. Two days prior to surgery he started to get the hang of the Infatrainer (which we still use now). Post surgery it was days before he would drink from it again however. He wanted his bottles and was mad as anything. Syringes were my best friend and got us home from the hospital and kept us home. He eventually got to the Infatrainer again and we haven't looked back.
Good luck with it all. I guess this must be coming up for you now. I wish you and Jackson all the best.
If it helps, I also really liked the arm immobilisers "snugglewraps". I found them on the internet and they were far easier to use and superior to what we were given in the hospital.

: Yes, she refused to take it from a cup, sippy
: cup or haberman spoon. We started
: introducing the cup during the middle of the
: day because the morning and nighttime
: feedings are the ones where they want the
: comfort of the bottle the most. We would
: also give her most of the formula with a
: bottle, and then once she wasn't starving
: anymore, we would give her a half ounce with
: the sippy cup. She really hated it, but at
: least she was aware of the existance of the
: cup. Then after surgery when she realized
: she wasn't going to get the bottle, she was
: very angry. But the point comes where they
: are hungry enough where they just accept
: things and take it from the sippy cup. This
: took about two days after surgery. But they
: won't let you leave the hospital until the
: child is getting enough food and fluids. So
: we would give her a half ounce of formula
: from the sippy cup (with her screaming),
: then we would use a syringe to suck up stage
: 1 apple sauce and bannanas and pudding and
: squirt it in her mouth and then we also
: would try pediolyte (sp??) in the sippy cup
: and also in the syringe. The syringe is
: going to be your best friend for the first 2
: days after surgery until the baby accepts
: the fact that their bottle days are over and
: they will have to drink from the sippy cup.
: Just keep practicing through all the
: screaming and the most important part is
: keeping them hydrated after surgery with the
: syringe. The sippy cup will work itself
: out.

: Rob, so was your daughter still using the
: bottle for some feedings until the surgery?
: Then you went cold turkey? It may sound sad
: but I am glad to know you had problems with
: this cup thing as well.
:
: I am using the Munchkin cup on your
: suggestion from another post. He just won't
: take more than a few ounces at a time - the
: past few days he has refused the cup. Oh
: well, we may just have to cut the bottle
: cold turkey post-op so he eats enough until
: then.
: Thanks.

: Hi everyone. I am pulling my hair out
: trying
: to get Jackson completely off the bottle
: before surgery - and the sippy cup has to be
: free flowing, no sucking docs orders.
: Jack's cleft repair will be extensive so
: these guidelines do make sense but I am
: losing faith that I can implement them. He
: is fed 100% orally so no feeding tube as a
: back-up.
:
: Right now Jack is mechanically successful
: using a Munchkin cup with a hole poked in
: the air intake to make it free flowing -
: messy when he tips it over but otherwise it
: does not spill down him. However, he will
: only take max 2 ounces at a time. He is
: down to 3 bottles a day: morning, lunch, and
: bedtime. I hate to cute out the lunch
: bottle because right now he gets the
: majority of his volume from the three
: bottles - and still he seems to wake up at
: night hungry.
:
: We have 7 weeks so I was going to slowly go
: to 2 bottles then one as his cup volume
: increased but I am not seeing any increase
: so this plan is dead in the water. So, I am
: wondering if you have any tips about how to
: get him to increase his volume with the
: sippy cup? Should I cut out the lunch
: bottle, have him starving by dinner, and see
: if he drinks more then? Cut out all
: bottles? All of my options seem to involve
: getting him starving and I hate this idea.
: What do you think??
