My son had his cleft palatte repaired in Dec 07. He was a huge thumb sucker and the first couple of days with the arm restraints were horrible. He had trouble sleeping and just wanted held. I spent the two week just holding him at night, he'd sleep on my chest as I watched tv or sat in a chair. We gave him tylenol for pain (however, we were assuming he was in pain) for about a week. It took him a month before he was sleeping normally during that time we gave him stuffed animals and blackets to cuddle with instead of his thumb. During the day was fine but as soon as we would take the arm restraints off his thumb went right into his mouth. He ended up wearing his arm restraints for 6 weeks because he wouldn't keep his thumb out of his mouth. He did figure out that he could get long toys into his mouth by moving his wrist or he would just bend over to suck on something. It's been 3 months since his surgery and he no longer sucks his thumb but has become a blanket baby. He's a 1 yr old this week so I'll let him have his blanket for a little while.
