HI Amy,
My son has always been around the fifth percentile for height and a little higher for weight. At 14 years old he is about 5 one and not done growing. I am really hoping for a big growth spurt in the next year or two. He was followed for several years by an endocrinologist to make sure he was growing OK. Since Jacob was staying on his growth curve and his hormone levels tested normal he was considered a late bloomer. Another thing is they checked his wrist by X-ray and determined that his bone age was off by about 21 months. An example of that would be that at five years old you have the bone development of a child three years and 3 months. In theory you would then grow another 21 months longer than an average child your age ultimately reaching a more advanced height than expected. (I hope that made sense.) I am really hoping Jacob reaches at least 5 foot six. Having said that, he has a healthy self-esteem and should be fine whatever size he is meant to be.

: How big was he when he was born? Has he been
: growing steadily? If the pediatrician sees
: that he is not getting off his usual growth
: percentile, then they will tell you not to
: worry. Have you looked at his growth charts?
: 33 inches is about 83 cm, right? I just
: looked at the charts and indeed for 3 years
: he is below the 3rd pecentile, but for 2
: years he would be in the 25th percentile
: which is not the smallest... Also, maybe it
: would be good to look at his height to
: weight ratio.
: Also, a lot of catch up growth for boys
: takes place when they are in their teens -
: they are the smallest in the peer group nd
: suddenly after the summer they need all new
: clothes because they grow a few inches in a
: month or so...
: These are my thoughts after reading your
: post. May be or may not be helpful...
