Re: Animal welfare laws I would like to commend veterinarian Jim Berry for speaking out on the sad state of our animal welfare laws. I do not think the average person knows the depth of abuse and neglect that goes unnoticed, unpunished and unreported. Why is it that a veterinarian, NBSPCA staff and animal care workers are the voices bringing this issue to light? Where are our elected officials? Two months ago - after the Minto acquittal - our MLAs, MPs and justice minister smiled for the cameras, but now what? Changing these laws is a political problem at the provincial and federal level. Pointing the finger at Ottawa has gone on for years and the voting public knows it is a "pass the buck" ploy by our local politicians. Where is the follow up? MP Keith Ashfield and Justice Minister T.J. Burke brought the need for change in letter form to Ottawa, but now what? Wait another 10 years and write another letter? The condition of today's animal protection laws also has a finger to point - directly at our politicians. Today's situation is their fault. They are the only people who can make changes happen to the criminal and justice systems. Where is their accountability? When the next animal cruelty case hits the headlines, remember to call your MP, MLA and the justice minister to say thank you for standing by while another animal suffered.
