We have free-fed our cats dry food for several years - not by my personal choice, but because I was away from home more often than not, and the cat care fell to my adult son. He is on-board with me now and is just as concerned by our fat cats' weight as I am. Out with the automatic feeder and in with one evening meal of grain-free dry cat food. I will start with Wellness Complete Health Dry Formula Compare Prices.
As pointed out in Step 1, we will split one cup of the dry food among Jaspurr, Joey, and Billy. Since we don't want Joey to lose weight, he will still get plenty by eating "dry food snacks" in Jenny's room. (Jenny will be next up on a weight management program as soon as I'm able to wean her to canned food.)
If weekly weigh-ins reveal too rapid a loss, we will adjust the amount of canned premium food the cats receive, rather than the dry.
To prevent boredom in their food, to ensure my cats get all the healthy nutrients possible, and to keep fussy eating habits from developing, I have always rotated the brands and formulas of my cats' food. With Jaspurr and Billy's weight loss plan, they will continue to receive a variety of premium canned foods, in a reduced amount. We'll start with these, in no particular order:
* Wellness Compare Prices
* Natural Balance Compare Prices
* Evolve Compare Prices
* Innova EVO Compare Prices
Again, after a couple of weeks if their weigh-ins show too rapid a loss, we'll adjust the amount of daily canned food gradually.
Janet Crosby, DVM and Veterinary Guide for About.com is also helping our editor with her cat Oliver's weight management program. Dr. Janet wrote an article to help assess if your own cat is overweight. The third point is searching for food or constantly begging for snacks.
While the other cats are disinterested in human food, Jaspurr is always on the lookout for it, especially pizza, which he loves. Henceforth, no more pizza, Jaspurr.
On the other paw, Billy is hopelessly addicted to Compare Prices dried bonito tuna flakes
, and will beg constantly. He will search for them endlessly if we have a can in the house. If he finds it, he will drag the can around and work at it tirelessly to open the lid. Billy, your tuna flakes will be rationed out in stingy portions in the future. You'll have to learn to live with it, little chublet.
