A rare postwar Onoto Magna model 1876 with transparent black barrel and wide 9ct gold cap band, hallmarked London 1946.
It took me years to find this model with the transparent barrel, eventually found in an auction in New York.
The 9ct gold cap band has the London hallmarks for 1946 and the maker imprint for JM&Co , Johnson Matthey, the prominent London bullion dealers used by De La Rue.
The barrel imprint is very crisp:
ONOTO MAGNA
DE LA RUE & Co. Ltd. LONDON
BRIT. PAT. No. 497169
And the filler cap has the model number 1876 and A7 (which may refer to the nib?) and the arrow indicating it has the ink shut-off feature.
The pen has the Onoto plunger filler which has been serviced with new seals and the pen fills and expels vigorously.
The big number 7 two-colour nib has the imprint De La Rue. 14ct London 7, it is a smooth fine point with easy flex, a nicely expressive writer.
The pen is 13.7cm closed and 17.4cm with the cap posted.
The pen is in fine condition, with just a touch of high point brassing at the top of the clip, the barrel has perfect transparency and crisp imprints, solid gold cap band, serviced it fills well, has the ink shutoff and a smooth flexible nib.
