A big Mabie Todd Swan “Safety” Pen (eyedropper) in black chased hard rubber with a matching big No. 6 nib.
Big, the pen is 14.7cm (5 ¾ inches) closed and fully 18.8cm (7 3/8 inches) when the cap is posted.
The crisp barrel imprint shows that the pen was made in the USA: “SWAN SAFETY PEN MABIE TODD & CO, NEW YORK
PAT. JAN. 26’ 04 MADE IN U.S.A.”. But is was almost certainly sold in the UK: it has an optional nickel clip: “SWAN CLIP MADE IN ENGLAND”. The cap has the instruction “SCREW CAP TIGHTLY” which related to the inner cap and the description “SAFETY PEN”.
Dating the pen: the nib has the “ladder” feed and inner safety cap to prevent leakage introduced in 1911, replacing the long-lasting under/over feed. During and after the war Swan most of the pens sold in the UK were by the expanding Mabie Todd English factories, so I think the pen was probably made between 1912 and 1914 or just after the war.
The big nib has the imprint “MABIE TODD & Co. NEW YORK 6” and is a firm fine point
Condition: excellent; just a slight even fading of the hard rubber, clear chasing, crisp imprints and the nickel clip is excellent.
The big nib is a smooth firm fine writer with good iridium.
