Nakaya Long Cigar fountain pen Kuro-tamenuri, black-red wajimia urushi with a customized stub nib by John Mottisham.
The layers of urushi and build up using red beneath the black urushi to give a special depth to the colour and over time more of the red will naturally show through the black, a sort of pool colour shift.
This long cigar is 166cm closed and when writing without the cap (the pen is not design to have the cap posted) the pen is 145cm, a very comfortable length for writing. A long pen it is non-the-less light, 45g, being made of hard rubber coated with the urushi. It comes with a standard Nakaya converter and also a pretty “Tadpole” painted converter (unused). It also comes with a box of cartridges and a Pilot converter kit to enable the use of industry standard cartridges from ink suppliers such as Diamine, which opens up a multitude of colours.
I had John Mottishaw customize a broad Nakaya nib to a 0.7mm stub, an attractively expressive writer.
The pen comes in the Nakaya wood presentation case, outer card box and fabric pen pouch, together with instructions.

Screw type cap with no band, Cap, barrel and section are made of ebonite lacquered with Wajima urushi. This model is long size and is supposed to be used without posting the cap when writing. As ebonite is a very light material it is possible to make the barrel thicker and longer. Therefore the balance point can be set easier to provide comfortable writing for everyone. "Tame" means "pool" and "nuri" refers to the lacquer coating process. You can actually see through the layers of clear urushi lacquer as if you were looking into a pool. Wajima artists use "shu urushi" (red color) for the base urushi on the barrel, and "shu-ai-urushi" (semi-transparent brown color ) for the finish coats. The black color is mixed in shu-ai-urushi for Kurotame-nuri. When the process is finished, you can still see the base surface of red urushi. After this coating process, craftsmen polish the surface over and over by hand for months in order to attain greater transparency, allowing you to clearly see the underlying red usurshi surface.
