Posted by Jerry Phillips I just wanted to let everyone know that Betty Hurta died last night (Wednesday). She had been in the Hobbs nursing home for several years. For the Jalites of other time periods that may not know, the Hurtas were pioneers of Jal. Betty and Tony owned the grocery store behind Wackers' in the 40s, passing it down to their son, Bobby, and his wife, Mary Lou Hedgpeth Hurta in the 60s, at which time it was known as Bob's Superette. In between those two times it was known as Spruill's. The Hurtas were very active in St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. Tony was very involved in the construction of that church and also built many, many of the houses in Jal. Daughter Norma Jean Hurta Engman, a 1953 JHS graduate, lives in Durango, CO. Tony died a few years ago, and Bobby died this past year. Norma's address is 250 CR 248, Durango, CO. 81301 (970) 259-3333 ext. 119 The Hurtas and the Phillipses were very close in the old days, and some of my earliest, most precious memories involve the two families and the wonderful times we had together. Rest in peace, Betty. Sincerely, Jerry Phillips ---
