Posted by Roxie In the late 1950's through the 1960's, Jal, N.M. hosted an annual Talent Show and Beauty Contest which produced local winners who went on to compete in state competitions as well as gifted musicians and singers who continue to this day to make beautiful music. Included in this group are "The Montgomery Sisters", who are the daughters of long-time Jal Residents, the deceased Hugh and Jackie Montgomery. The "Sisters" took part in the Talent Show for many years and walked away with first place honors every time they performed. Gina (Montgomery) Brewer and Montie Carol (Montgomery) Wesley began singing together when they were 12 and 7 years, respectively, performing songs written by Gina as well as by the Everly Brothers, Brenda Lee and other popular artist of the '50's. Gina and Montie Carol were joined a few years later by Terri (Montgomery) Wheeler when they brought the house to it's feet with their rendition of "Bird Dog". The "Sisters" continued to sing together at talent shows, concerts, fairs, radio and television stations, telethons and local charity events until the mid-'60's when they moved on to pursue careers and raise families of their own. Time, however, has not dulled their love of singing together and every holiday or special family event finds them filling the house with the strum of guitar strings and the sound of sweet harmony. What was a trio became a quartet when the youngest of the "Sisters", Shanna (Montgomery) Stokes joined them, adding her beautiful, rich baritone voice to the mix. It is with great pleasure that the "Montgomery Sisters" have accepted the invitation extended to them by Freddie Watson Dunlap of the Helping Hands Charity group to perform a benefit concert on September 22, 200l, 7:00 p.m. at the Jal High School Auditorium. Montie Carol (M.C.) is a prolific writer and many of the songs to be performed are original compositions and arrangements of her's. The "Sisters" will also be performing some "Oldies" as well as more contempory tunes. Gina, M.C., Terri and Shanna are excited about "going home" and look forward to seeing old friends. The show promises to be an entertaining walk down memory lane with something for everyone along the way. If you have questions or comments, Freddie's email address is fredgourdhead@apex2000.net
