Posted by TangRA on 6/4/2004, 9:07 am, in reply to "What religion did proto-Bulgarians have?" We are not Bulgarians if we do not keep the Bulgarians traditions alive. The problem is that we don't know what our traditions are like any longer. For the Bulgarians who live in Danube Bulgaria, Christianity and Europe are very essential, but for those who settled along Volga Islam seems to be the greatest religion in the world. Where is the Proto-Bulgarian trace in all these conroversial beliefs of ours. Obviously, it is not possible for any people to survive without losing part of its traditions and adjusting its customs to the present conditions.

What if the Bolgarians from Magna-Bulgaria did not believe in Tangra? If they did not believe in Tangra then who did? Is Tangra a made-up name for a god? What is so special about Armenian-Orthodox Christians? Actually there is a chance that exactly because of the religions Bulgarians converted to that they lost their ancient traditions, history, language! The Bolgarians from Volga Bolgaria became Muslim and those from Bulgaria became Christians. Where are the old Bolgarians with their real language, traditions and culture?
The religions were supposed to unite the people but they only make us oblivious to our past. At least if we remained believers in Tangra we would know now our roots, perhaps, if we did not go extinct long time ago.
But in our particular case it looks like we switched 180 degrees in the opposite direction by betraying what our ancestors believed in. Anyways, that is history...
