Tuesday, November 7, 2000 at 16.27 p.m. (local time) Ingrid Victoria Sofia Louise Margaretha (born Princess of Sweden) Queen of Denmark and widow of King Frederik IX, closed her eyes for ever.
Her Majesty's last official 'task' had only been shortly before: on October 12, she had invited several members of her family to attend a special concert by Mstislav Rostropovtch (who may count plenty royal ladies among his admirers) at Amalienborg Palace.
Shortly afterwards announcements were made by the Court, informing about the fact that the Queen was getting weaker & weaker.
Queen Margrethe phoned her son Frederik, who was in Australia, to hurry back home as his dearly-beloved grandmother, with whom he had a very special bond, was getting worse by the day.
Her Majesty passed away at her home, Kancellihuset on the grounds of Fredensborg Slot, in the presence of her daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and their spouses.
Also present were her youngest brother, Count Carl-Johan Bernadotte & his wife Countess Gunilla.
Queen Ingrid's remains were first transferred to Fredensborg Slotskirke (carried by the male members of her family) and were later on taken to Copenhagen: Christiansborg Slotskirke (castrum doloris) were many thousands Danes bade their last farewell to a greatly admired & beloved Queen.
The funeral took place on November 14, where she was finally laid to rest in Roskilde Cathedral.
A great many royals attended the funeral, as well as the roads (both in Copenhagen and in Roskilde) were packed with griefing crowds.
Some pictures here, of those memorable November days, showing the impressive farewell to a very memorable Queen!
* all pics were scanned from Danish books, mags & newspapers in my own library.
