He never knew his mother and therefore would probably not had particularly strong feelings for her, especially given the fact that throughout his formative years, her reputation was not exactly favourable, especially in her native Scotland.
However in death it made sense to try and improve her image, ultimately he was dependant on her for his claim to the English throne.
Its worth noting that Elizabeth I didn't try to rehabilitate the image of her mother.
