I learned in Spanish media that Don Sabino Fernández Campo, Conde de Latores and Grande de España, was a confidant to the King, who experienced with him the most difficult periods during the Transición (the change from the Spain under the military junta to a democratic Spain) with -amongst more- the military attempt to seize the government in 1981.
According to ABC Don Sabino Fernández Campo has always been known for his sagacity, discretion, prudence, loyalty, sense of humor and finesse. The King himself stressed on many occasions the sharp wit, the prudent approach, the fairness and the unlimited generosity.
Don Sabino loved his country, but it was not him but the King, who chose the name Latores to accompany the title of Conde which was bestowed on him. Latores was a small town where his father came into the world, a humble but enterprising businessman who made his way and was able to procure an academic degree in law. Latores was also the town where Don Sabino spent his vacations during his childhood and adolescence.
An anecdote: Don Sabino Fernández Campo came to La Zarzuela (the King's residence) to start as Secretary of the House of the King. As Don Sabino opened the door of his office and walked to his first visit to the King, a chilling roar from a beautiful cheetah sounded. After the cheetah (which turned out to be harmless and obedient) the King came to welcome his new Secretary.
In 1980 Don Sabino became involved in the establishment of the Fundación Príncipe de Asturias. He also coördinated the education projects to form the Heir.
In 1990 Don Sabino Fernández Campo was appointed as Chef of the House of His Majesty The King, as successor of Don Nicolás Cotoner y Cotoner, Marqués de Mondéjar.
In 1992 the King was pleased to create Don Sabino Conde de Latores and Grande de España for his "long and brilliant career of an outstanding military and civil service to the State" (Royal Decree 6 May 1992).
In 1993 Don Sabino retired from his service and the King appointed him as Privy Councilor granted him the Grand Cross of Carlos III.
In 1997 Don Sabino married the author Doña María Teresa Álvarez, his unseparable companion.
