Posted by Richard Here is an excerpt from the 1982 yearbook (after 1982 Nationals) ... “Oregon State will feature its strongest women's gymnastic team ever, predicted Coach Ron Ludwig, and he was right. Under his guidance, the team succeeded in capturing the NCAA berth with a victory over previously undefeated and nationally top ranked Utah with a score of 146.10-145.20. The upset occurred when Laurie Carter, who decided to compete despite a sprained ankle, helped the Beavers come from behind as she won the balance beam competition. Gaining the Division I regional championship's was no easy task. As the Beaver team began competing in the NCAA Championships instead of the AIAW's, where they met stiffer competition. Other highlights of the season included a trip to Japan during December where they competed in exhibition with Switopia, the top club team in Japan. We've got a good combination of experienced upper classmen and talented freshmen," said Ludwig. This year the team featured two seniors, four sophomores and three freshmen. The freshmen, Jayne Weinstein, Patti-Jo Knorr and Ruth Herman brought experience, positive attitudes and hard work to the team said Ludwig who has coached at OSU for seven years. Weinstein and Knorr have collectively competed in ten international competitions, including the 1979 World Championships and Maccabiah Games. Knorr was also named to the 1980 Canadian Olympic Team. The upper-class talents included Mary Ayotte-Law, the top American scorer at the World University Games; All-American Laurie Carter, the defending national balance beam champion; and All-American Linda Parker. Also returning this year to add depth to the team were Pam Bond from Eugene, Sally Humble of Lompoc, California, and Barb Hale of Mt. Prospect, Illinois. Ludwig has developed a national power in women's gymnastics at OSU. He stresses the team but also strives to have the individual develop into the best that she can. Ludwig has just that with outstanding 1981-1982 gymnastics team.”

Here is a March 22nd, 1982 Eugne Register-Guard newspaper article (the Monday before Nationals, OSU had won Regionals in Corvallis over Utah, they placed 4th at Nationals ... first year of NCAA's)
See the link below for a Google scan of the newspaper ...
(Note, it mentiones Patti Jo Knorr was a Canadian National Team member ... she was also named to the 1980 Olympic team ... the Boycott year!
Head-shots of Patti and Pam Bond are at the top of the page, ... Pam Bond is an Attorney)
On the facing page to the right is an article about NAAG and their gymnasts Tracee Talavera, Julianne McNamara, and ... a 14 yr-old from St. Louis by the name of Tanya Service!
(She scored a 36.700 in the AA for third place behind the other two in this meet that is described.) Also mentioned is a non-NAAG gymnast from Boise Idaho, Michelle Gabiola who had verballed to OSU and was a freshmen in 1983.
Oregon's loss was Oregon State's gain
Go Beavs!!,
Richard
