This weekend I watched my VHS tape of the 1996 meet between #8 OSU vs Cal, that was broadcast on Prime Sports (precursor to Fox Sports) ... I should say half of the meet ... as I didn't watch much of Cal. I haven't often gone back and watched old tapes, but I'd been wondering how some of my old tapes have held up ... so I first watched a tape I recorded on February 23rd 1983
... it looked fine! (It was an open heart surgery (triple-bypass) that was broadcast LIVE on public television from Tempe Arizona!)
This was the last regular season home meet, so Heather Bennett, Kristie Snyder, and Renee Runyon, were honored before the meet. (The following week would be the Pac-10 meet in Corvallis.) It was fun to see how things have changed in 13 years!
One of the announcers (Judy Corwin and Bob Akamian) mentioned that RQS was the average of the top two home meets and the top two away meets!
One of them said it was used for qualification to Nationals
... I don't think so, I think it determined the top 7 teams in each region that went to each of the 5 Regionals. OSU had gone to 9 straight Nationals through 1995!
The differences continue, with the two vaults ... mentioning we might see some upgrades on the second vaults ... Kristie Snyder scored a 10.0 on her hand-spring front-pike! Second of her career (11th 10.0 in the Nation on Vault in 1996 ... this was the year Karin Lichey of Georgia scored a 40.0 in the AA.) That vault is now a 9.9 SV. Danae was doing a hand-spring front-tuck-1/2, a 10.0 SV (now a 9.9). Amy Slack must have been the last OSU vaulter to do a Tsuk vault!? It was a hand-spring 1/2 on - tuck-full off. Amanda Turko did a h-s-pike for her first vault and upgraded to a h-s-pile-1/2 for her second (both 10.0 SV). OSU 49.375 (season high) to Cal 47.850 (that hasn't changed).
Danae Phillips had a small problem in her bars routine so had to adjust her routine, and they didn't get to see her "Phillips" (full twisting Pak salto)
. Renee did two "Shushinova"(?) releases, one in each direction over the high bar. Heather Bennett scored a 10.0 on bars ¡K the 3rd in the Nation so far in 1996 (the other two were Karin Lichey and Lori Strong of Georgia) ¡K beautiful pike Yeager and I probably have never seen a better looking double layout dismount before or since ... great form, feet stuck together throughout her giants, the dismount, and the stuck landing!
OSU 98.350 Cal 96.200
It was mentioned that they didn't honor Senior Nathalie Lauw (lead-off on beam, from Corvallis) before the meet as she was coming back in 1997 ('92 HS grad, Senior in school, was a freshman walk-on in '94) ... but she didn't come back.
One of several upgrades in the meet, ... Deanne Droegemueller upgraded her beam dismount to a double back ... but fractured her ankle and missed the rest of the season.![]()
(OSU had been using 14 gymnasts during the season ... but only 13 could be taken to Regionals and Nationals ¡K it is either 14 or 15 now.)
OSU 147.100 Cal 143.950
Anne Marie Vassallo upgraded her opening floor pass for this meet to a tucked full-in ... but went to her knees.
... don't remember if she competed it again this season ... or in '97 ... I don't think so.
Final: OSU 196.025 Cal 191.925, Amy Slack 38.875 (OSU's only AA'der beat Cal's only AA'der).
Go Beavs!!,
Richard
