I'm not sure what you meant by ... "... could hurt people trying to qualify for individual finals."
Yes, I think the plan would be to have the event finals in the early afternoon on Sunday. So the gymnasts, that don't want to compete on Sunday's, wouldn't compete meets at UCLA, Stanford, or Cal-Berkeley ... or be on these teams?!
Yes, we will have to wait and see how this changes things. If this 6-6 had been instituted for the regular season I would be more "upset".
It was already tough to make it out of Regionals to Nationals ... this doesn't necessarily make it tougher for OSU ... just adds another layer of "chance" to the equation ... as some times it would help (as in 2003, and other years) ... and this past year, it would have been much closer between #2 & #3 at Regionals. It may mean a team or two getting an "upset" at Regionals, but then they have to get a few more upsets at National preliminaries (since only two of 6 qualify to Finals) ... then more upsets in Finals to win! Maybe we will see another team besides the traditional 4 win it all (but I think it may have happened any way) ... and is probably limited to just a couple of teams ... Florida, Stanford, ... maybe one or two others ... since I think at least two of them (UGA, Bama, Utah, and UCLA) will still be in finals.
Another idea that some on the college gym board have thrown around lately (and earlier) is the idea of using win-loss record to qualify to Regionals!? I don't think this would work very well (or not at all) ... the only way it might work is to have some system like football and factor in the ranking (by RQS or average) of the opponents and the margin of victory! Is loosing to a #1 team by 0.050 equal & opposite to a win over a #25 team by .050, ... etc? I think it might work if each team was responsible for holding the landing mats for the opposing team!
I could maybe see it used in determining a conference winner ... if they wanted to do away with the Pac-10s ... since each team competes against every other team ... but there would be a number of ties with only 6 opponents.
Go Beavs!!,
Richard
