Posted by Bob on January 10, 2007, 10:51 pm, in reply to "the wonders of medical science?" However, I also agree with you: Especially, considering the age we're living in now. There are so many advances in stem cell research. I would be willing to bet that in about 10 years time-we'll see treatments developed via stem cell, that will reverse a number of diseases and disorders. Even brain damage, they have been testing on mice and have discovered that when stem cells have been injected into damaged areas; the cells regenerate the damaged areas. I saw a clip on the news about the story about the girl you're talking about: and the doctor said: "she'll never, it's impossible, it'll never happen." I gotta say: I don't believe that. This is why I say the parents did this as a matter of convience. Imagine, in 10-years-time if brain damage were reversable? That girl may have been able to speak or move.
I heard the same story a few days ago. It was actually a couple in England and it happened two years ago. In my view: the two parents decided to do this as a matter of convience-which is understandable, to a degree. There are things to consider: such as the child getting older and having to be carried. I know that I am heavy and sometimes, I have to be helped upstairs. Also, when the child grows up, puberty and stuff like that would have been very difficult.
