Posted by Michael on January 8, 2007, 3:13 pm, in reply to "Question about muscle spasms and chronic pain" As we age our body does change. In anyone with limited movement this becomes worse with age. It all depends how aggressive you want to become with treatment. Medication has side affects, but maybe if your sleep is affected its time to discuss that with your doctor. Certain activities or lack of activities can cause spasms. Sitting and typing at a computer can cause a lot of muscle spasms, not just in people with cp, but with everyone. I worked in a rehab center and every other patient in there was in with a complaint about muscle pain or spasms related to incorrect computer use, or video game use. The shoes you wear, the chair you use, they way you walk or move yourself can all cause certain muscles to be used and might cause spasm or pain. It is really important to track different activities that seem to increase or decrease your spasms. Keep a log and see if you have more pain and spasm after certain activities, maybe you need to take plain Tylenol before bed on the days you have certain activities. It’s not unexpected to have more spasm after increase activity or after a period of no activity. It’s often about balance too much or too little of something might cause it. Its really very complex, someone could ask you different questions all day long about what might cause it and still never hit the answer that’s why keeping a log of it helps. There might not be a particular cause either, it may just be your body is aging. The possible answers are many. 1. Try to keep track of activities and related pain, try decreasing or increasing an activity to see if it makes it worse or better. Try a day with no computer typing, or wheeling as much or whatever activity you do that might cause pain and see if it makes a difference. Maybe you are doing something that makes it worse without knowing it. 2. Try plain over the counter Tylenol, 325mg two tablets, see if it helps deal with the discomfort, if it does, great, if it doesn’t tell your doctor that also. 3. Make sure that you are healthy in other ways. Make sure your fluid intake is good, being dehydrated can make toxins build up in our systems making our muscles hurt. People often avoid drinking enough because it means more trips to the washroom. Make sure your not eating quick sugars they will only give you a high then a low, your better to eat complex carbs.. Avoid white bread, sugar, chips etc. 4. I know its personal but making sure that your bowels are regular is so important. If they are not and you are mildly constipated you will have issues related to this. Make sure your eating fruits and drinking enough water. good luck.
There are many things that can cause muscle spasm and muscle spasms can cause pain.
I would suggest this as a plan
I have Fibromyalgia and must manage my health carefully or I have muscle pain and spasms.
I hope this helps. I went from being in bed unable to move with fibromyalgia 3-4 time a week to only 1-2 times a month with making life style changes. Its a pain to eat healthy and take care of ourselves, but the results show.
