Posted by Michael on November 28, 2006, 1:02 pm, in reply to "rWhy do kids do what they do??" I would suggest that your daughter has learned that this is a good way to assert herself and get out of a particular activity and get some attention along the way. It is a socially unacceptable behaviour and she knows it gets her what she wants. An appropriate response is to remove her from the area and place her in a time out.Ignore her grabbing at her clothing, and most definately do not be prying her fingers off her clothing. This just creates a power struggle. Time out should be sort of boring or maybe a better word is calm, no TV for example. Indicating that she can discuss the issue that upsets her, but that grabbing her shirt is not acceptable. It is important that if this was to avoid a task that she return to the task after the time out when she has calmed down. Regards Michael
